ICW Nov. 22nd

I. I think a policy that needs to be changed here on campus are the meal plans. We as students buy these meal plans so that we can use it, yet the school puts a limit on how many we can use at each meal. I think if a student has 14 meals they should be able to use those 14 meals whenever they want to. I would assume the reason why the school limits the meal plan to one swipe a meal would be so that people don't use it all up in just a few meals. The problem with this is that if someone eats lunch really early before a class they can not get another meal later in the day until it was considered dinner time.

II. The four perspectives of my exploratory issue were:

1. Illegal immigrants need to be sent back to their countries and our borders need to be sealed.
2. There need to be harsher laws outlawing these illegal immigrants from being hired which will deter them from wanting to come into our country
3. There is not a problem and the illegal aliens are just trying to better themselves like the pilgrims wanted when they started our country.
4. People don't care and will trust the government to do whatever the best thing is for our country

I would say number 3 is the perspective that is based on the current state of things because we believe that we are giving these people an opportunity that they would not necessarily have if they were back in their home country. based on our economic condition of our country i believe number 2 or number 1 should be our country's perspective. because of the economic state we need the jobs that they have for our own people who can not find jobs. Also we can not afford to pay for them through our taxes. These can be enforced as policy by simply passing laws that would hurt companies hiring these illegal immigrants. For example a law that would increase the companies taxes may deter the company from wanting to hire this cheap labor.

ICW 11/15/2011 Planning Essay 4

• One solution people believe to this problem of illegal immigrants is to enforce stronger laws.
• Another typical viewpoint is that people think we should kick all of the illegal immigrants out of our country and completely seal our borders.
• The opposing view to this is that of people who believe that it would be inhumane for us as Americans to kick these people out of our Country.
• Others believe that illegal immigration is not a big problem and we should focus our attention and resources to other problems in our country such as the stock market or the War on Terrorism.

I am planning on writing a proposal paper, proposing that we enforce stronger laws which will hopefully deter illegal immigrants from coming into our Country and US businesses from hiring these illegal immigrants.

I feel as though I am fairly well prepared with my research but as I have learned from previous papers you can never have too much information so with that being said I will probably go back and look up a few more things as they come to mind in order to strengthen my paper.

ICW 11/15/2011

The only changes I made to my paper were ones that I realized I needed to make based on re-reading my paper. I switched two of my paragraphs and moved another one in order to make my paper flow better and I also reformed some sentences to make them make more sense. The sample student essay did help me especially with where to place my paragraphs and ended up helping my paper flow much better and become easier to understand. Unfortunately I was unable to get my peer review until early this morning so that did not have any effect on my revisions. The strongest aspect of my paper would probably be my introduction as I was able to find a lot of good facts on illegal immigration to set the stage for my paper. I would say the thing i am most concerned about would be the viewpoints. I could only really come up with two strong viewpoints either for or against illegal immigrants and because the paper asked for 4 viewpoints I struggled to find information supporting the other two.

Sedaris in the Chicken in the Henhouse claims that most Americans stereotype Homosexuals as immoral sinners based on their religious and personal beliefs. He says in the piece that the people who claim this are just ignorant and are not credible sources. He uses his own personal experiences to give an example of how homosexual's feel on a day to day basis. He also gives an example of an argument against homosexuals but tries to rule her argument is invalid because of her ignorance and feels as though it was a waste of his time to even try and argue against her. Sedaris uses hyperbole to show how ridiculous it is that homosexuals have to feel like they are constantly being judge and should be worried about their actions everyday instead of just being able to live their lives like regular people.

SWA #23 Topic Proprosal

The issue I have chosen is about the illegal immigrants who are coming to our country without becoming citizens. This is becoming a problem because they are living here and taking jobs because they offer to work for such little money. They also use our hospitals and schools but do not pay taxes for them. This makes the rest of the people in this country who are citizens have to pay for them.

The people interested in this issue are many US citizens and all the men and women who are running for offices in our government. Because it is such a controversial issue their plans on how to fix the problem give them leverage on whether or not people want to vote for them.

Some people believe that illegal immigration is not a big deal and that would be inhumane for the US to send these people back to their original countries because of how they are treated back at their homes. The people coming over are typically very poor and try to send money back to their families too support them. The argument against this is that they are taking money from our economy that we can not afford to let go of at the moment. They are making our country more poor while making their original country richer and with the situation our economy is in right now we could use the money to focus on ourselves. Then there are the people that believe in order to fix the problem we should just make them all citizens. The argument against this stance is that our country is becoming over populated and growing very rapidly as it is. If we start letting every one become a citizen it could get out of hand.

Because of how bad our economy is, this issue is of particular interest to me. I do believe that these illegal immigrants are affecting our economy and should be deported. I am perfectly fine with letting people into our country in order for them to get a better life as long as they help benefit the country by paying taxes and paying for the benefits we get such as medical bills and schooling. All this requires is them to become citizens before they move here.

ICW The Problem

The problem is that people from other countries who are not US citizens are living in our country without having to pay taxes or anything else that we as citizens must do.

It is important because we still take care of them in our hospitals and it is causing our country millions of dollars. Also they are taking jobs and our country is becoming over populated.

The people affected are every US citizen who has to pay taxes to help these people and also the citizens who can not get a job because the illegal immigrants are working for such cheap labor that they can not compete for these jobs.

People might disagree that this is a problem because they say if we kick them out and send them back to their countries that it is inhumane because they are just trying to get a better life than the one they are having in their country.

SWA #21

The Onion in this piece is trying to argue that the American people don't read anything anymore because they figure if it is important then they will see a video clip on tv or it would have a picture by it. They are saying that the citizens have been forced down to such an elementary level that in order for anyone to read it there has to be a picture or something to catch their attention. We see this in the article through the writers sarcastic comments and the people he is interviewing comments it becomes especially sarcastic in the end where he quotes the person as saying "I'm sure if it's important enough, they'll let us know some other way, after all, it can't be that serious. if there were anything worth while bburied deep in that block of impenetrable Englsih, it would at least have an accompanying phonto of a celebrity" The writer uses the form of hyperbole to stregnthen his arguement by trying to show how rediculous some people in our country have become. He tries to show people these extreme cases so people will make sure they are not like the people who have been quoted in the article. He almost tries to make his reader feel as though they are the people that are being quoted to make them realize what has become of our country.
